The Smolensk air disaster had taken place in 2010, when a plane carrying the Polish president, Lech Kaczynski, the identical twin brother of Jaroslaw, had crashed over Russia, killing the president and many other senior government officials, including the president of the central bank, military leaders and eighteen members of parliament.
