~Love is a powerful force. It cannot be bought. It cannot be taken or stolen. Although sometimes it must be fought for, it must be given freely.~
Tif climbed up a vine and perched beside her. “Mama always said when things get heated, get to gettin’, and you two are hot.”
“If anyone touches her in any way, death will come swiftly. And I am the reaper.”
Do tell your lord if he wishes to threaten my mate in any way, he will find me as a shadow at the foot of his bed. It will be the last thing he ever sees.”
We’re not actually betrothed.” “Oh, but we are, whether you like it or not. Or are you angry I haven’t gotten down on one knee?” “Would you? Get on your knees for me?” she drawled, holding back an eye roll. “For you? Oh, absolutely,” he purred.
“You’ll find backing down from a challenge isn’t in me. Actually, challenges give me life. That’s why I enjoy your company so much. I never know what you’re going to say or do. You might stab me or kiss me.”
“You want to speak to me on the topic of politeness?” Piper snickered on his other side. “I’ve been very polite,” Layala said and couldn’t hold back her smile at the obvious lie. “Down right cordial, even. Probably the sweetest elf you’ve ever met I’d wager.”
Mathekis and the pale ones want you to doubt. They want you to fear them because they know you don’t know how strong you really are yet. But when you find out and let go of thinking you’re but a pawn in this game to be used—when you realize you are the queen, the most powerful chess piece on the board, they will fear you.”
“I’ve had enough arguing with you. As your mate, you are mine. You can deny it until you have no breath, you can fight me and hit me and call me every filthy name you can think of, you could even try to kill me again, but I’m not going anywhere. You are mine and I am yours, and I will destroy anyone who gets in my way.”
“And as much as I claim it’s all for Palenor, for the good of our people, it’s not. Because if I was being honest with myself,” his voice dropped low, “I would sacrifice too much if it meant you were safe.”
“Fear is the enemy of hope. And you will need hope for what lies ahead.”
Grabbing her waist, he firmly pulled her on his lap. “Claiming what is mine.”
“Why are you in my bed, dearest? Not that you are unwelcome.”
Her chin trembled and tears seeped from her eyes. “Can I stay? Can you hold me? I just want to lay next to you.” His brows raised slightly, and he nodded. “I’d love nothing more.”
“But if you want to stay, I promise I’ll love you so fiercely that they will write sonnets about our love. I will tear this world apart for you, I will fight until I have nothing left to give and destroy anyone who hurts you, and I will guard your heart most of all.
He would suffer the world for her, and she wouldn’t even give him a chance to love her. She couldn’t even give him a drop of herself when he’d sacrifice every last bit for her.
Why was it so hard to say goodbye to a horse? Harder than it was to leave Aldrich. But Phantom wouldn’t understand why he’d never see Thane again.
Love was a powerful force. It could not be bought. It could not be taken or stolen. Although sometimes it must be fought for, it must be given freely.
He dropped to his knees and kissed the tops of her knuckles on both hands. “Marry me, Laya. Marry me and be my true mate. I will worship you in every imaginable way.”
