That to me, is being free. That who I am is non-negotiable. That I am myself. Sometimes, I just wish that identity had a place among others.
Jamie frowns at me. “Protect yourself from what?” “Just ignore that.” “I don’t think I will,” he says. “Tell me.”
“You’re really pissed,” she says, like I’ve stunned her. I take a long slow breath before I say, “Jules, I know you love me. I know that in your warped way this was you doing what you thought was best for me. But I don’t need that. I need honesty. I need you and everyone else in our social circle to respect that I live my life my way, and it might not look like yours, but it’s still valid.”
Gently, he tugs me closer, until we’re nearly chest to chest, his eyes holding mine. “That means a lot, that you told me.” “It means a lot that you didn’t act like you see me differently now.” He tucks a strand of hair behind my ear as the wind whips it across my face. “I don’t see you differently. I see you better.” My heart leaps and clatters against my ribs. “That’s a nice way to put it.”
No, not love. Of course not. But perhaps . . . understand me. How rare that would be.
“Generally, I just make sure they grow up healthy.” “Don’t downplay your work,” she says fiercely. “Don’t make yourself small just because someone else has.”
“You are delightfully strange.” “Likewise,” he says.
“I’m saying, you’re the best kind of chaos I’ve ever met. And while chaos used to terrify me, you make me crave it. I’m saying, even though this is an absurd situation we’ve backed ourselves into . . . I’d do it again in a heartbeat because it’s given me you.” The world turns peach-pink, glittering gold, as the pyrotechnics in my chest build to a fever pitch. “You would?” “Yes, Beatrice. Because while I’ve found an unlikely friend in you, I’ve found much more than that, too.”
