The geographical end point of the CPEC is the port of Gwadar on Pakistan’s southwest coast, close to the Iran-Pakistan border. In 2017, China took over a forty-year lease for the construction of a deepwater port, a three-hundred-megawatt coal-fired power plant, and an associated special economic zone.
