As soon as the King was dead, pillaging broke out and the nobles around him went off to protect their own lands and belongings. They left behind servants who pilfered all the King’s belongings for themselves, even his finery and clothes, leaving his body unceremoniously dumped on the floor of his bedchamber. It is a story often repeated to demonstrate the consequences of being an unliked king.
