He was still staring at her when his name was called. Oleander lifted her head and their eyes met. She smiled and Jackson felt his heart leap out of his chest. Instead of smiling back, he slapped his free hand over his chest, as if that would stop his heart from running away. The action made her laugh and the guy at the counter said his name again. Jackson finally found the strength to smile back as Oleander pushed out the chair across from her.
‘We are badass women who can’t be put down by any man, no matter what they call us. You, my friend, will rise from this and like a phoenix you will slay everything in life.’”
“I want to be your boyfriend.” Jackson nodded, finishing off the donut. “I want to be the person you turn to on a rough day, be someone who can text you at stupid o’clock and put a smile on your face. I want to get to know you, as much as I can, because what I’ve seen of you so far? I like that person a lot.”
“You said you like the way I look at you. How do I look at you?” “Like you’ve seen a rainbow after days of darkness.” “You are a rainbow, Oleander. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.”
“Make me.” Christ, this woman.
“Jackson doesn’t know it, but he’s the kind of person everyone wishes they had in their lives. As a friend, as a lover, as everything. I hope these help you create something magical, Niles, because I’m not always good with words, but maybe you can help me make him feel how being with him makes me feel.”
“I’m falling for you, Oleander. Even though it scares both of us and we literally just talked about it today,” he explained with a small smile. “But when I’m with you, I feel more like myself. I don’t have to hide my nerdy side, I don’t have to pretend. I can be me.”
