Coiling the grass around his finger, frustration and anxiety swelled up in his chest, behind his eyes. In that moment, his reality was heavy, crushing, suffocating. There were no whimsical wishes to cling to, no magic rings or planning ahead. Just him, alone, facing the reality that no matter what he did, it might still not be enough. It might never be enough.
“What…” Cylvan started, making Saffron flinch when his fingers gently brushed along his sore cheek. Saffron just kept his eyes down, biting his lip as Cylvan’s voice turned venomous. “Who did this to you?”
“If I am indeed a raven—then you are the treasure I wish to spend all my days appreciating.” Saffron wrapped his arms back around him, pulling Cylvan in more. There were a thousand things he wished to respond, but one stuck out the loudest: I wish to always be a safe place for you to close your eyes and rest.
“Tell me more,” Cylvan encouraged breathily. “Tell me about how you’re going to perform… forbidden magic for me, púca.”
“Like a raven over his treasure,” a foxlike smile crossed his lips. “I want to memorize every beautiful, forbidden thing about you.”
