“If I find you in these halls again, I will have to punish you.” His expression was stern, mouth tight and brows drawn, and the look forced my face to pale as I realized how serious he was.
“Speechless? Good, maybe you will listen. I don’t want to have to take you over my knee, but I am a true believer that a good swatting is sometimes needed.”
“I want my worth to be seen and I deserve decency and respect! My value goes beyond my looks!”
“Why would the Lord of Denimoore be doing the work of the blacksmith’s apprentice? And why would he want a woman’s help?”
“Because I enjoy working with my hands.” He paused, his breath fanning across my skin, his lips grazing the delicate flesh of my lobe. “And because then I could show you what my fingers can do.”
“You are not this weak, Skylahr. You have had a devastating loss, but don’t you dare let it consume you.”
“Living for others is a painful existence, Skylahr.”
“It may be painful. But it’s easy.”
“I’m not asking you to come with me, Kalian. You owe me nothing.”
“I know that.”
“Then why come?”
“Maybe I live for others too.”
“I am sorry for what I said and the pain my words caused you. I didn’t mean them. I wanted to push you, but I crossed the line.”
“You can’t pick and choose what words you truly mean. Why should I believe what you say now?”
“I just have to say that was the most arousing thing I have ever seen. Nothing is better than watching a strong woman put a man on his knees.”
Love is the most powerful healer.
Noticing the change in attitude, Kalian grinned at me. “There’s my girl.” Rage coursed through me and I glared at him. “I am not your anything.”
Silver eyes blinked up into my face in confusion and I sneered down at him. I was either going to kiss him or kill him.
“I see strong shoulders, built from years of hard work and training. I see a warrior. I see a fierce woman who is more than my equal.”
“You’re thinking too hard.”
“Seriously, Sky, you’ll drive yourself insane if you keep questioning your every move.” “It’s not my every move I’m worried about. It’s travelling without protection and leaving the only person who has the potential to help us stop the Seductress.”
“There is no honour in dying because of stupid reckless choices!”
“This blind sense of honour will get you killed, Skylahr, and I’m worried you do not have enough self-preservation to realize how easily it will happen. That, or you just don’t care.” My chin wobbled and I sank my teeth into my lower lip. “I care, of course I do.” My tone was meek, and I hated how easily he saw through me, but it wasn’t as if I had no regard for my own life, or that I wished to end it. That wasn’t it at all. I just truly did not believe myself to be more important than anyone else. If I had the ability to help someone in dire need, should I not risk everything to do so?
I not only felt foolish and incredibly stupid, I felt ruined. Like the tiny pieces that had made me who I was had been traded, and now I was left with nothing but the wreckage of a stranger. A foreigner whose bruised, aching heart beat only for another.
“I have been waiting for you for centuries and I will not apologize for protecting you, for putting your life first.” “That wasn’t your choice to make,”
“You know, I hate secrets. Truly despise them.”
“Everyone has secrets, Skylahr. That’s just something you’ll have to learn to accept.”
Peering up through my lashes, I watched as his eyes studied me. His hands continued to stroke my face gently before his lashes fluttered closed. “I couldn’t go out there—couldn’t risk dying without tasting you one last time.
“Please, Gods, fight with everything you have.” Leaning forward, he pressed one last sweet kiss to my mouth. “And don’t you dare fucking leave me.”
“You need to stop carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders, it will crush you.”
will live my life regretting so many of the choices I have made. But one I will forever stand by is loving you. You are the Huntress, and I am your Protector, and I love you, Skylahr Reed. I will never regret that.”
