You see, Tolstoy was wrong about this. Individuals do matter. They really do. History is a force, it’s true, but it’s a force with faces. It’s individuals who make it do what it does or at least they have a hand in it. And if a specific individual is taking history in a direction that is against the interests of our country, against the direction in which the leaders of our country feel it’s right or good that it should go, then the question becomes how can that individual be made to exit the historical scene without our leaders having to explain their role in his departure.
