The Church was able to weather the collapse of the Western Roman Empire thanks to the Germanic tribes being Christian themselves, and the Church’s usefulness as a steadying force was also maintained. The landed gentry were also left more or less alone, because whatever ruler was in power needed them to keep the crops coming in.
