Because even though we aren’t getting married, you are the person I cherish most, someone I will always want in my life. In fact, I feel one hundred percent certain our friendship will outlast all of Wade’s marriages.”
“This isn’t a real proposal, because this isn’t a real engagement. But I thought maybe we could have one real thing to celebrate our friendship and the way we show up for each other. Something that will outlast this fake engagement.” His smile turned a little cocky as he shrugged.
“Enough. I’m set in my ways and not going to change. Take me or leave me.” “I never want you to change, Hutton. I’ll always take you. I just wish you could see yourself like I do.”
“What would you wish for?” I’d wish for the guts to tell you I love you. Because I don’t need you to be perfect or magical. I just need you to stay with me. But a wound had been opened up tonight, and it was too big a risk. In New York, when we’d talked about the forever kind of happiness, he hadn’t offered me hope. He’d offered to meet me in New York once a year. He’d offered me a piece of his life, of his time, maybe even of his heart, but not the whole thing.
“I didn’t jump, Hutton.” Her shoulders rose. “I fell.” Her words stabbed me in the heart, but I was a pro at masking what I felt inside. “You’re asking for something I can’t give.” “I’m not asking for anything.” She wiped her eyes beneath her glasses. “You know, I’ve spent years being terrified of this very situation. Years of being careful with my heart so I wouldn’t ever be rejected.”
“I thought I was so smart,” she said. “But here I am anyway. And even though I won’t ask for what I want, I won’t settle for less than I deserve.”
“Felicity MacAllister, I’ve loved you longer than you know, and there will never be another human on this earth that matters more to me. I may not have magic powers, but you understand me, you accept me, you make me happy. I know this is probably a shock to you, and if you don’t want to say yes today, that’s okay too, but you are the only one for me, today and always.”
“It’s okay if I do. I don’t have to be perfect. Or fashionable. Or even symmetrical.” I looked at Hutton, and his smile was everything. “I can just be me. And that’s enough.”
I had to admit that even with imperfections, some moments in life were still perfect. Both things could be true.
