“Let’s do it,” Luca says, dropping his hand. “Let’s split up—temporarily—” he adds when my eyes go wide. “Instead of five relationships, let’s go on five dates. I wanted to feel fireworks. I wanted the thrill and excitement and cupid arrows and heart-eye emojis. It never occurred to me that the good parts are just half the equation. The other half is heartbreak.
