Unwrapping it, he reveals a slim platinum band. It takes a moment for me to realise what it is, but then I take it from him, feel the weight of it in my hand, heavier than it looks, shinier than I expected.

‘It’s just that I know how desperate you were to be a mum. I’d hate for you to feel pressured to take on a big promotion if what you really want is to have more time with Leo.’

My heart twists beneath my ribs and I force myself to turn around, away from emotions I do not understand and cannot control.
‘Why don’t we have an early dinner? I know you didn’t sleep well – you must be exhausted – and the fish pie will take a good hour to cook. Do you want to get the oven heated up and maybe make a salad dressing? I’ve got a few emails to deal with and then we’ll have a proper evening together.’

Trying to ignore the flit of panic in my chest, I remind myself that Stephen is often home later than expected, that he does not have a regular nine-to-five job, cannot clock off at a fixed time every day. He tries to avoid bringing work home, will often stay late at the university to finish marking essays or plan the next day’s lectures and seminars. It is not unusual for him to be delayed.
I think about the mobile phone Zahira gave me, crammed inside a pair of balled-up socks at the back of my underwear drawer, the charger tucked in a shoebox at the bottom of the wardrobe. I wish I had never hidden them. I should have left them out on the kitchen table for Stephen to see, explained where I got them from.
The truth skittered through Livvy’s mind in search of a secure hiding place.
