She had a habit of filling up her cart with all the things she wanted and never, ever checking out.
He had tried to perfect his smoldering-eye gaze in the mirror once, and he looked more like an old man trying to read the back of a cereal box without his reading glasses.
Damn this couple and their outrageous sexual chemistry, Klara thought. Is this what drugs feel like?
That was a big, stupid risk. He was going to have to remember he was the adultier adult here.
Klara could picture her mom wagging her finger in her face. What a fool she was being. Giving up the milk. Being a cow. Being free? Something like that.
She liked to tailor her music to her moods when she was writing,
“Is she … is she okay?” Klara worried about the older lady. She had never heard such noises before. There was snoring, and then there was this, whatever it was that Marcy was doing. Summoning a mythical creature from the dead? Regurgitating a human hair ball? Was she in pain? Did she need help? An exorcism?
She thought instead that maybe she should just flutter her lashes. But then again, that wasn’t working for her either. She was going to have to remind herself to watch YouTube videos on flirting. There was clearly work to be done.
She could feel a bit of her heart harden each time she told herself she was going to get hurt. She wished she didn’t have to do that, but que sera sera.
Damn me and my sexy skills! Why can’t I do something not sexy? Like sell vacuums or be a butcher. Those aren’t sexy at all.
She was happy to remember, but as hard as she tried, she wished she could forget.
