People were overrated.
She looked so damned lost. Something about the picture she painted made my chest crack wide-open. I would’ve done anything to fix whatever was wrong.
A laugh broke free from Shiloh, and it was the most beautiful sound I’d ever heard.
“Didn’t think pain could be beautiful.” “It is when it makes you feel not so alone.”
“You’re touching me.” There was wonder in her tone that had my brows pulling together. “Would you rather I didn’t?” Shiloh’s gaze flew to mine. “Don’t let go.” “I promise. I won’t let go.”
“It doesn’t hurt,” she whispered. “What doesn’t?” “You touching me.” I fought the urge to rear back—only decades with horses kept me from doing so. The training that kept me from reacting strongly when I got knocked sideways. “You thought it would?” “It always does. Whenever someone touches me. It…it’s like it grates against my skin.” I bit back a million different curses. “Tell me if it’s too much.” She shook her head back and forth. “It’s not.”
But I wanted to give Shiloh more. I wanted to give her everything.
I just hoped like hell it didn’t take her away from me.
The world around me slowed, and each beat of my heart shook my entire body. This wasn’t happening. Images played on an endless reel in my mind, each one worse than the last. And all of them were my fault. Because I’d known that someone was out to hurt her. And I’d left her alone anyway.
“That’s simple.” She arched a brow in question. “I want you. Always. Whatever you want to give.”
“That’s the best we can hope for. Making each other better, giving each other a safe place to land.”
Ramsey scowled at his dog. “I love you, but you’re a damn woman-stealing cockblock.”
“Shiloh.” Ramsey rasped my name, the syllables vibrating against my lips. He pulled back, searching for something. “I love you. That word isn’t enough, not for what I feel for you, but it’s a start.”
Ramsey cupped my face, his fingers trailing down to my neck and the opening of my robe. “I thought this part of me was broken. That I’d never have this with anyone. You’re a miracle. Made me truly live again.”
Ramsey’s fingers were gone, and then he was rolling on top of me, one hand framing my face. “I’d give you the world if it was within my power.” “All I need is you.”
But I didn’t care. Every last piece of me could unravel because I was here with Ramsey. He was mine, and I was his. And he would always own my soul.
I straightened, leaning back against the counter. “I’m happy.” It really was that simple. Ramsey had given me the kind of joy I’d never thought to have. And not simply because I was in a relationship, but because he’d opened my eyes to so much. He’d helped me find the bravery to step into the unknown, and what was on the other side of that was more beautiful than I ever could’ve imagined.
I had to hold on to that. Hope. I’d given up on it years ago, but Shiloh had given it back to me. She’d shown me the light that hid within the shadows. Showed me that I could be more than I ever thought possible. And I would fight for her. Hell, I’d burn down the world to get her back. No one could stop me.
My throat constricted as everyone in the room looked at me. “I’ll watch over her.” Hell, I’d breathe for her if I had to.
“Could barely breathe without you,” Ramsey whispered against my lips. “Every time I inhaled, it felt like breathing in shards of glass.”
“You’re my sky.” I stilled. “Your sky?” “My pinpricks of hope on the darkest nights. You are that in living form for me. You always will be. And I think we can be that for the boys, too.”
