His fingers squeezed around mine gently, and he pulled me in a step, so we were all up in each other’s space. With his mouth at my ear, he whispered so softly I’d later think I imagined it. “Whoever did that to your face doesn’t deserve to breathe.”
“I’m never gonna let anything happen to you that you don’t want to happen. Not in the club, not in the bar. Not anywhere I am. Ever. You got it? No one will touch you unless they have a death wish.”
Vincent’s voice was barely a murmur when he spoke. “When I get off your hand, you’re going to take your cheap ring, get in your car, and then forget that Bliss ever existed. You say her name, I will end you. You think her name, I will hunt you down and put a bullet through your skull. You so much as accidentally drive past her on the street, and I will chase you down, gut you, and feed your intestines to my dog.”
“If I come, do I get final say in said nickname?” “Oh, I plan on you coming, baby. Nickname or not.”
“Why didn’t your fiancé do this for you?” I opened my mouth to answer but then realized I didn’t have one. “I don’t know. I never asked…” “You didn’t ask me either, and yet, I did it anyway.”
Liar. I hadn’t had a sip. I was just stupidly awkward.

“I dismissed myself from jail. Without permission.” I gaped at him. “You escaped? How is that even possible?” “Is it supposed to be hard?”
“One time, Bliss. You get tonight in the dark, because I can see I’ve probably already pushed you out of your comfort zone. After tonight, every time I fuck you, it’s gonna be with the lights on. Don’t deprive me of watching you.”
War’s palm smoothed over the sting, massaging it away. “I don’t ever want to hear you talk about yourself like you did just before. It’s insulting. To you, and to me for wanting your body the way it is.”
“Normally when I tell women to come, they’re naked in my bed and begging me to let them.”
“You clearly haven’t seen Rebel when she’s pissed. People run out, just to avoid her wrath.” Rebel beamed like I’d given her a compliment. “I’m so glad you noticed!”
