“I grew up in this town, if you’ve forgotten. And I know you.” Nash laughed. “Sweetheart, you don’t know me from a bar of soap.”
“Don’t speak to her like that, please. She’s had a very tiresome few days.”
Kellan tugged at my hand, guiding me to sit at the table with him. But instead of getting out toys, he pinned me with a look, his face completely serious. “Can I tell you a secret?” I nodded. “Of course. I’m good at keeping secrets. I have many I’ve never told anyone.” Because telling people you had a body count in the hundreds was never polite dinner conversation. Especially when you weren’t talking about people you’d slept with. “I think Miss Befany-Melissa is pretty. “I’m really sorry about this morning,” I said eventually. “Caleb…” “Came to a center full of small children, your place of work, and threatened to end you. He also called Little Dog a rat, which she is clearly not. I think that says all I really need to know about Caleb.”

Vincent put his foot down on the accelerator, leaving the ice-cream parlor behind us. “I dismissed myself from jail. Without permission.” I gaped at him. “You escaped? How is that even possible?” “Is it supposed to be hard?”
I laughed. “That wouldn’t happen.” He raised one eyebrow. “Why not?” Ugh. I knew it would only be a matter of time before I made things awkward with my hang-ups. “Maybe if you did it with Siren.” He frowned. “Why?” I raised one shoulder. “She’s gorgeous.” “And you’re not?” “I’ve had a lifetime of people telling me how pretty I’d be if I just lost some weight. And they’re right.”
Motive? Is that where you’re going with this, Bliss?” He leaned hard on the door behind him. “Jesus fuck. Anything else you want to accuse me of? Rape? Torture? How about global fucking warming?”
