Dume was an Aatxe, and they were well known for their gentle souls; they wouldn’t abuse their power as enforcers and would treat offenders like mystics instead of animals, no matter their crimes.
A large, handsome man sat down at the other end of the bar and lifted his hand to get Rory’s attention. “I’ll be right back,” she told the trio in front of her. She approached the man and smiled, but the moment she was in front of him, her breath caught. Something was off, and anytime she felt this way, it meant a black soul was near.
Her mother turned, and the sound of crunching glass beneath her feet made Rory flinch. “She’s not supposed to be there. He’s bright because his darkness hides.” Her eyes locked on Cora. “You shouldn’t be there!” Her words were gibberish, and Cora shrank into herself. “Mom?” Rory asked. “You’re scaring me.”
He quickly sheathed himself and guided Rory to the couch. It took him a few tries to push into her entrance, and when he did, he grunted. “This feels incredible.” He looked at their connected bodies. “I never expected it to feel this good.” Oh, fuck. “Is this your first time?” she asked incredulously. “Yes,” he admitted. “But I’ve studied what to do.” Not well enough if he couldn’t find the clit.
Omg how mortifying….it’s totally different if he was the love interest and she knew it was his first time. Ugh I have second hand embarrassment.
Two were one, and one is yours. Do not let him fool you. His darkness is poison. Only the golden child can save you.
She grinned. “What do you want to drink?” Before he could answer, a group of enforcers led by Dume stepped through the door, and the look on Dume’s face made Rory’s body go numb as the group headed in her direction. “Dume?” she asked, forcing herself to stay calm, but deep down, she knew what this was. Dume shook his head and brought his fist to his mouth before speaking in a broken voice, “Aurora Raven, you are under arrest for the murder of Jasper Witlow and the suspected murders of twelve others.”
They were taking her to the Scales of Justice, a Royal who was said to look upon someone and know the perfect punishment for their crimes. There were only three Royals in the realms; Gedeon, the Lux King, who controlled light; Adila, the Scales of Justice, judge of the guilty, and Caius, the Umbra King, who controlled shadows.
Historical texts state there had once been a fourth Royal, Atarah, who ruled over Erdikoa as the Lux Queen, but Caius murdered her, caught standing over her body, soaked in blood with his dagger in hand. Upon her death, Atarah’s power transferred to Gedeon, and Adila locked Caius away in Vincula. Rory shivered at the immense power the Royals possessed.
He was tall and muscular, wearing a fitted black button-down shirt opened at the top, perfectly tailored black slacks, and silver rings adorning both hands. His bright golden eyes stared her down, and when he was close enough for her to see his terrifyingly beautiful face, she stepped back in horror. It couldn’t be. As her eyes traveled the length of him, she nearly fainted from shock. He stood out against the rest of the room, not because he was the king, but because he was in vivid color. His skin was a hue she’d never seen before. Sun-tanned beige, her soul whispered in the back of her

“Umbra King,” she spat back. Her voice lowered so only he could hear as she said, “Or should I call you Bane?” An amused look crossed his face as he took a step forward, and shadows curled around them both. Before she knew what was happening, a shadow grabbed her chin and forced her to look at him. “You will address me as ‘Your Grace,’ or I will carve your tongue from that pretty mouth of yours.”
“I promise, little butcher, after your time with me, you will wish she sent you to hell. My only regret is when you return to Erdikoa, you will not remember your time here.”
The announcement elicited more murmurs from the crowd, and he held up a hand to silence them. “I trust you will give her the welcome she deserves.”
Caius lingered outside the doorway to the kitchens, cloaked in shadows. He told himself he came for his usual late night sweets, but he knew it was a lie. His curiosity about Aurora Raven led him here against his own protests. After overhearing her conversation with Max, a man convicted of breaking his neighbor’s legs with a shovel for disrespecting his wife, Caius stopped himself from entering the room.
“Sorry, kitty. I would rather not chance you taking a chunk out of my leg. I need them to run away.”
“Did you lure me out here to feed me to her?”
He rolled on top of her and hovered over her naked body, and Rory’s eyes widened as his pants disappeared, showcasing the biggest dick she’d ever seen.
Sam shook his head, and the look on his face punched Caius in the gut. “You are a fool.” He stopped on his way out the door. “Do not treat her like she is beneath you. She is your equal, and while you may not want her, she deserves to be treated as such.”
“Nothing about the king’s actions makes sense,” Asher said, before chugging the rest of his beer. “He killed his sister, but we know he’s not the nightmare they say he is. He humiliated Rory in front of everyone and then bought her a new wardrobe. The man is an enigma.”
Rumors spread about Nina’s housing reassignment, and Rory tapped her glass. “I don’t know if it was because of me, or because she kept showing up wherever he was, begging for his dick.”
After being poked and prodded, the doctor deemed her healthy, told her to take the potions Caius gave her, and left. “How many credits do we get at the pharmacy?” Rory asked. She hoped a lot. When he didn’t answer, she turned herself around on the bed to look at him. He only stared. “You will have whatever you want. Credit limits no longer apply to you.” Her mouth fell open. “Did you push me, and this is some type of penance?”
Sam set the vase on her dresser and said, “You need to get better.” Rory started to flip him off but remembered the last time she did and decided better of it. “I believe the phrase you are looking for is, ‘Get better soon.’” “No, I said what I meant,” he replied as he stared at the chairs like they personally offended him.
his arms loosely around her middle. “I’ll miss you enough for both of us,” she whispered in his ear, and he nodded into her shoulder. “I may not remember you,” he whispered back. “But when I see your face or hear your name, my soul will know you’re good.”
She wanted to stomp her foot and demand he believe her. “Your words are honey, but your actions reek of shit because you are full of it. No woman wants a man who treats her like an insignificant ant, not even if he is a king.”
Rory, The oversized buzzard won’t let me in. I guess your royal boyfriend hasn’t changed his mind about letting you attend the ball. Tell him to fuck off for me. The bird, too. I’ll be back tomorrow, and if the brute doesn’t let me in, I will light his wings on fire. -Bellina
She felt him relax, and after placing a gentle kiss on her hair, he said, “It was inevitable. Your soul calls to mine and mine to yours. We couldn’t fight this if we tried.” She pulled her head back and met his intense gaze. “You speak as though we are soulmates. I don’t love you, Caius, and if you love me, you fall in love too quickly.”
Rory threw her arm across her eyes. “I thought Samyaza was made up, and we’ve all seen him peacocking around the palace.” “That’s rude,” a baritone voice said from the open doorway, making Bellina and Rory jump.
She opened the door to his office, and ice doused her insides. Nina slid off Caius’ desk as she buttoned her dress, and when she saw Rory, a smug smile pulled at her lips as she stepped into her shoes and sauntered to the exit. “You didn’t really think you could keep him, did you?” the redhead asked and opened the door with a wicked laugh.
He squeezed her hand. She was right. Her independence and pride meant he wouldn’t be able to stay with her every second of the day, nor would she allow a guard. She needed to be able to defend herself. “Sam, Lauren, and I will teach you self-defense.” She bristled, offended. “I know self-defense. My abilities were taken, including my strength and speed, and I need to reacclimate to my new body.” “Who trained you?” If it was a boyfriend, Caius would train her ten times better.
She didn’t like giving head, but his words made her wet. He was going to get the best blow job of his life, and then he was going to fuck her as a reward.
She would never tire of the feel of him moving inside her. They were both close, and she felt his dick begin to pulse.
“Did you just spank me?” she asked in disbelief. He spanked her again. “I did. Cheaters will not be tolerated, Miss Raven.” She wriggled in his hold, and despite herself, she giggled like a schoolgirl. “Do you promise to be good?” he asked, his deep voice rumbling against her thighs. She bit back a smile. “Yes, Daddy.” His body went tight, and his grip bit into her legs. “Watch what you say to me, unless you’re ready for the repercussions.”
Rory stood motionless, taking in the gore of it all. “I knew you weren’t a house cat.”
The shift slipped over her arms in one fell swoop before he pulled the shirt over her head. “I buy my clothes to fit.” He placed a kiss on her forehead. “I don’t need ropes in my clothes; only my bedroom.” Rory turned his chin to look at her. “Funny. Next time, bring them over to play.”
He watched her unwrap her sandwich and take a huge bite. “You take that sandwich almost as well as you take my cock.” She sputtered, and for a split second, she knew she would die of either embarrassment or asphyxiation. He smirked and took a bite of his own food. “You can’t say that in public,” she whisper-yelled. He took a sip of water and smiled. “I can say whatever I want.”
“That is not a reason to get married,” she said, shaking her head. “If you want to marry me, earn it, but more importantly, mean it.”
“Most men want to control women.” He pushed his chair back and stood. “If you want to walk through the realm naked, you will do so, and I will admire you the entire way.” Before he could pull out her chair, she stood, needing to move before she led him into a side alley to blow him.
When Rory finished her set, she released the bar, landing gracefully on the ground. “I want to spar.” “I would annihilate you.” Caius waved his hands over his body. “Immortal strength, remember?”
