I peek over my shoulder, and my breath hitches as I lock eyes with a stranger. A blue-eyed stranger. A blue so deep, like a tropical stormy ocean’s night. No, that’s not right. They’re more like midnight. Like when the moon is at its brightest in the sky, casting a shadow over the dark sea. Or is it metallic blue, like a rainbow fish?
“He doesn’t see me, Noah. Not like I wanted him to.” “He sees you.” Noah’s steady gaze floats across my face. “How could he not?”
He kind of reminds me of home. And that… is kind of scary.
A minute or two later, I look up, catching Mason’s eyes in the rearview mirror. He stares at me, looks to my seat belt, and then his attention goes back to the road ahead, his mouth curling into a small smile as he does. Something inside me settles right then, only I’m not so sure what it is.
