Believing in Jesus—trusting in Him fully—is what opens the door to eternal life. And it is a gift. That’s why Jesus says the work of God is that you believe. Salvation is a gift of grace that comes through the perfect life and sacrificial death of Jesus. If we think we have to earn it, salvation will never be ours. But if we can for a moment stop all the arguing and justifying of ourselves in our own minds long enough to simply embrace the beauty and the glory and the wonder of the gift of God, we will see that God freely gave what we could never earn.
