“I’ve spent my entire adult life dreaming about Satan fucking me?” I groan. “I seriously hope not. If Satan has been on your mind instead of me, then we have a problem.”
“Oh, I don’t know, maybe this little thing called a deal with the Devil? Selling your soul to a demon. A demon pact. A Devil’s bargain—”
Lucifer is sprayed with blood. There’s an arc that goes right along his impeccable abs—from his navel, upward, across his face. I feel sticky. I know it’s all over me too.
I want to straddle his lap. Lick his face. Suck his lips. Bite his neck. Grind myself against him. He observes me like I’m the most wondrous thing in the whole universe. The Devil is looking at me with barely contained awe. At the carnage I’ve wreaked. At the way my chest heaves with the thrill of it.
“What do you really want with me?” I ask, hating the way my voice is all breathy with anticipation. “You’re mine. You will walk by my side.” “I’m a nobody. It doesn’t make sense.” “You were promised to me before you were even born. I’ve waited twenty-eight years for you. You are far from insignificant.”
I’ve flummoxed the King of Hell!
“I wasn’t haunting, stalking, or being a sick perv. I was watching out for you. Protecting you.”
“Oh, God!” I yell. He pauses the assault. “God can’t help you. You might want to redirect your begging my way. I’ll accept Lucifer or my King.”
I’m afraid of what you do to me, Angel. Afraid that you’re out there and I can’t protect you. Afraid that I could lose you. Afraid that if you die, I might explode so violently that the whole world will feel it.
Lilith. Her name’s Lilith, not Lyra.
And then it hits me like a ton of bricks. How did I not see this before? With a name like that! “We’re talking about The Lilith? Mother of demons?” I sit up straighter. The one and only. “What happens when you die and she takes over?” I cough, finding those words catching in my throat. Much of the same. It’s always the same shit in Hell and on Earth.
There’s nothing I’d love more than an angsty murderous reunion with you, Angel, but I’m a little tied up right now.
‘All those years your father thought he was training you to fight me, but all he was doing was making you more perfect for me.’
