There were a lot of things I’d given up over the years to save money, but coffee would never be one of them. I’d shank a bitch if someone tried to take away my caffeine.
“Oh, I enjoy it, but I’ve found the best heat comes from my own fire, not from a man’s.”
Seeing him felt like a sun was settling inside me.
“I’m glad he trusted me enough to call but fuck if it didn’t destroy me. For the rest of my life, I will never forget the way that boy’s voice shook as he begged me to save you.”
“But I will follow you anywhere, baby. I’ll run a never-ending race for you. Name the distance. I’ll go at whatever speed you let me. I’ll sprint, walk, or crawl to get to you. I will never give you up.”
“That maybe we can meet halfway.”
“Garrett!” The voice broke, hitting a higher pitch at the end of my name. “Jamie? Is that you?” “Garrett, he’s here! He’s here and he’s angry and I’m scared.” I threw the comforter off my lap, twisting to lower my feet to the floor to stand. “Jamie, calm down. Who’s there? Where’s your mom?” “He has her! Please, Garrett, he’ll hurt her, don’t let him hurt her. No, no, no, he’s yelling now. Please, Garrett!”
