In case any members of the Christian right missed Bush’s messianic point, he kept repeating it. “Freedom isn’t America’s gift to the world,” he’d say. “It is God’s gift to mankind.” As simple as this statement sounds, the theology behind it is murky. By “freedom,” Bush meant the “democratic” governments that the U.S. was attempting to install by force in Afghanistan and Iraq, regardless of whether those countries desired them.
