Remy had to quell the urge to shout at him for being such a fucking hypocrite, because only a few hours ago, the lord had his goddamn hands on him.
A million questions raced through Remy’s mind, chief among them being What the fuck? and Do I really want to know and get myself involved?, though his mind stopped short of answering the latter.
“You are an infuriating human who constantly tries my patience,” Malekh said, “but I’ve never pretended.” And slowly, without breaking eye contact, the man pressed his fingers against the small wound, tongue briefly flicking out, and Remy’s breaths spilled out of him in soft, jittery waves.
“We’ve just beaten up corpses for all you absolute gits,” Remy yelled again, “and I’d really appreciate some fucking reciprocation!”
“Take it from someone who talks too much,” Remy gasped, after he’d stuck into the man’s chest the two knives he’d squirreled away inside his sleeves, thanks to Elke. “You bloody talk too much.”
“Do you two constantly travel around, turning every dying animal into your fucking creature of the night?”
“Why do you keep turning someone else’s compassion into a favor that you owe, instead of accepting that you are worthy of it?”
We’d already decided that the next bed you tumbled into would be ours, if you were willing.
In the past, I would have never said no to a fuck, no matter how meaningless you might think it is.”
“She doesn’t look like she could be older than I am.” “She’s six hundred years old.” “Well, shit.”
“I intend to work you hard regardless.”
“If I win, then I will carry out tonight what you were so convinced I would.”
Remy stared at them, then back at Xiaodan. “Did I bloody win?” he asked again.
“That’s a lot of words to admit you’ve been acting the fool.”
These aren’t the same caves, he told himself, and it’s been ten years.
The information he desired about the Night Empress right within his grasp, and someone finally willing to tell him.
“I’m only jesting, Malekh. Fuck if I’ve never been so glad to hear the sound of your goddamn voice before.”
“He’s not always as foolish as he makes himself out to be.”
That brought out a low chuckle from his now-lover.
He knew they loved each other. And he didn’t know what his place was with them, but if he had even a tenth of that affection, it would be more than he’d ever had in his life. It made him feel lonelier, but also a little less alone.
So you see, I’ve been a test subject all my life. It’s the one thing I know how to do, even if that doesn’t always come with bottles and syringes.”
if only to talk and share stories of how we have each survived the schemings of our sires despite the odds, then neither my laboratory nor the chambers I share with Xiaodan will ever be barred to you.”
I just kept Breaker spinning, hour after hour, terrified that if I stopped, they would kill me or turn me.
Remy wasn’t greedy. He just wanted to reach out and find them both, take in as much as he could of them now, to bring with him as he grieved in the colder, longer nights ahead.
“It doesn’t matter how big they are if they bow down before you in the end.”
“Behold the miracle your blood has given me.”
“But I have found that there is someone else much more important to me than the treaty.
“Has it ever occurred to you that perhaps you are worth saving? That you are worth the time to be kind to?
“I trust that you don’t tell me things because you’re worried about hurting me, even though I think it’s a fucking bloody misguided thing to do and you really should stop it.
