Lisa really did believe in God’s word — all of it. So, whenever she’d think about Henry Carter, she’d think about Matthew 5:44, as well, and whisper to herself, “But I say unto you, love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.” Yes, sitting in her car that day in Miltonville, she repeated Matthew 5:44. Then after saying the scripture, she whispered, “God said to love my enemy.” She frowned. “In my opinion, any man who would abuse my mother and desert me is my enemy…even my so-called father. So, if you’re still living, I love and I pray for you, Henry Carter…like God’s word instructs me to do. Mama forgave you, but she set up things so you couldn’t hurt us anymore. I forgive you, too. But I’m not a foolish woman. I don’t need an abusive individual in my life, so I release you.”
