Gandrett lowered her head to whisper to Riho. “Tell him I sometimes dream of him the way he asked me to,” she told the bird. “And that the morning after looks gray and dull because it wasn’t real.”
Icy blue greeted her with anything but welcome as she opened the door to let herself into the yard. “The gods must hate you, Gandrett Brayton, or they wouldn’t have sent you back to me.”
“I don’t know if I will be faster with my thinking if you follow me around.” Taghi raised both eyebrows in response. “Out of respect for you, I won’t suggest that my mere presence makes it hard for you to think.”
“Not Fae,” some of them whispered.
“The water is like a perfect lover, Mckenzie. If you let it, it will smooth itself into your movements. It will carry you, make you float and fly, and never pull you down. It will let you feel weightless for as long as you allow it.”
“Marry me, Mac,” he whispered, lips lingering by her ear. “Marry me, and I’ll be yours. I’ll be yours in any way you want. I’m yours already. Ill-fatedly yours.”
“I love you, Mckenzie Brenheran,” he said in a voice that promised the flowers of spring and the glistening sun on the ocean. “I love the real you. For a while now. I thought you should know in case I haven’t made myself clear all those times I’ve told you what an amazing person you are. “Make of it what you will. Love me back or let me adore you from a distance, but don’t expect me to taste you and be able to go back to not wanting you. Don’t push me over the edge. For once I fall off that cliff with you . . . I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to return.”
“I have dreamed of you every night since the day you left, Gandrett. Every night. And every day, too. And the blood I have shed, I shed knowing that it would buy you a chance to survive.”
“The gods cried with joy when they made you, Gandrett, and each of their tears became a star on the firmament, a timeless reminder of that moment such beauty, such bravery was brought into the world.”
