Trauma during the critical first three years of life, including abuse and neglect, can disrupt a child’s brain development. The impact is broad and varies in severity. Some develop developmental trauma disorder, also referred to as reactive attachment disorder. Victims struggle to form meaningful and authentic relationships, regulate their emotions and control their impulses. They have poor executive functioning skills, low self-esteem and may have issues with learning, eating and sleeping.
