“Look at me, Sloan; you’re safe with us. No one in this world will hurt you as long as you’re with us. Call us your guardians.
“I will never ask you to do anything you don’t want to. I am not like those men. I will wait until you ask for me—when you want me as much as I want you. Just tell me when, love.”
Call me selfish, but I wanted to keep her. She had this gravitational pull on me, and the further I got from her, the stronger the force became. I wanted to touch her, hold her, taste her on my lips. I wanted to worship her tight little body and protect her from all things that could go bump in the night. She was my girl now, our girl, and no one was taking her away from us now.
We’d fallen for the job—something we’d vowed never to do. She was the job, but now she was ours. No one would ever fuck with her again, not if I had anything to do about it.
“To trust someone is to make myself vulnerable. To survive this world, I never expect protection from anyone else but myself.”
“Sloan, who’s hurt you? Tell me everyone who’s ever done you wrong, and I will take care of them myself.”
“Call her a whore again, Arno, and see what a bullet between the eyes feels like.” The way Dean spoke was almost demonic.
“Baby girl, my past created this dark soul. Every shadow, every scar, every ounce of my being—all perfectly mastered by the demons of hell itself. Stained black for the rest of my life. My past is my future.” He paused a moment before continuing. “Never envy the devil; he may just want you as company.”
“You want this, love? Us? This life? Be careful with how you answer, because if you indeed say yes, this is it. You’re ours, and there’s no going back.”
“I’ve never belonged to anyone before. I’ve never felt safer in my entire life as I do when I’m with you three. When you say there is no going back, what is there truly to go back to? A life without passion, without people who care about me, a life of being invisible and alone. I never want to go back. If you’ll have me, I would like to stay.”
“You deserve to be treated like the goddamn queen you are. We don’t deserve you. You’ve accepted us when we were the fuckers who stole the world you created for yourself.” He grabbed my face between his rough callused hands before continuing. “I can never give you back what we took from you, but I will fight to the ends of the fucking world to ensure no one else ever hurts you again, love.”
Whoever just took my family was about to pay in the most painful fucking way.
“Don’t leave me, Dean. Don’t you fucking leave me.” I sobbed, holding his body to mine as I slowly watched the life drain from his face. “Baby girl, you are so beautiful.” His voice was a soft moan as his eyes stayed shut longer and longer. “Don’t do that, Dean! Keep your eyes on me!” I screamed, shaking his body.
