I brushed my fingers across the surface and tried pushing my thoughts to them. I want you to come back. The low laughter felt like tingles across my skin and through my mind. Silvery tendrils of sensation like they were reaching out for me too. Soon, mate. That was Marius’s voice. I could tell the difference now. And Erik. Sleep. It was like a caress inside my head, and I went back to sleep.

He opened the box, and my jaw dropped. It was pearls. A whole string of white pearls as big as my thumb. And from the bottom of that strand, a pink stone hung, encircled by more pearls. “Is that—?” “A pink diamond? It is.” “It’s beautiful.” And more than that, I nearly felt drawn to the stone. A magnetic feeling. I wanted to touch it. Gently closing the box, Raoul smiled again. “I’m glad you think so.”
The sadness in Alexandre’s eyes disappeared as he laughed. “What do you want to eat?” He asked, eyes darkening. “My mate being hungry is unacceptable.” My stomach growled in response. “I would kill for some pizza. But I doubt they’re serving that.” Alex stood and walked in the direction Marius and the doctor disappeared. “Where are you going?” “To get you pizza.”
“You’re connected to the opera house. Stuck during the day, and can only go so far at night. On the full moon you’re not stuck, but you’re a little closer to in-between forms because moonlight is sunlight—which is kind of werewolfy to be honest. You guys were powerful as fuck, and basically royalty until you got stuck here, and I’m your mate because my spiritual, essential, soul energy is an exact match for yours. We can make the mating thing almost physical by you guys going vampy and biting me, and you’re all three totally okay with sharing because it’s meant to be. There are more creatures

“You’re…immortal, right?” Marius said. “Yes. We can be killed, but we won’t die.” Anxiety suddenly burned in my chest. I knew it was the part of my brain that was still in awe that this was happening and thought it didn’t make sense to be talking about forever after such a short time. “So, what about me?” I asked softly.
He shook his head. “I’ve never heard of a human, immortal mate.” My heart sank. “That’s it?” “Of course not.” Erik’s voice was dark. “We’re finding a way out of this building, and then we’ll find a solution for that. The world is full of magic, Christine. We exist. The world may not have found that answer yet, rare as mates are.” “But,” Alex said gently into my skin. “If we can’t, it doesn’t mean that we’ll love you less.” I gasped at the word love. That’s what this was, right? Impossible, beautiful love that’s effortless. I didn’t know that I could say it yet. But it was there, beating under

While I was face deep in my pizza they’d explained their power. Not magic in the traditional sense, but a connection to the world. They could go further from the opera house than others might be able to. And when gargoyles roamed freely, their power fell into a natural hierarchy.
“Did they have anything to do with you being bound here?” A low growl shook beneath it. “We can’t prove it, but we believe so.” Then he sighed. “We’re afraid that they’ll use you to get to us. Speaking of mortality. If you die, even before we amplify our bond, it will be…unbearable for us. Could break us.”
Like he knew exactly what I was thinking, Alex came for me, reaching around me and sliding a hand into my hair. Erik stepped back and let Alex step forward. He tugged, tilting my head back so I could look nowhere but at him. “We match you,” he said. “There is nothing that you can tell us that will shock us or make us think less of you. It doesn’t matter how dark or how dirty you think it is. You are ours. Your deepest, blackest desires were made to mirror us. You want to run? We want to chase you. You want to let us tie you down and fuck you with our tongues and tails until you forget the

“It’s been a while since I talked to Penelope.” She was the ancient river nymph that watched over this section of the Seine. Grumpy most of the time, she could be bribed for favors.
Everything went silent in my head. Callum was here. In the building again. In the same room as my mate. Alex and I were moving to the door in unison. Nothing mattered except for her. Not the potential appearance of two men coming out of Christine’s rooms. Not the fact that if enough people kept seeing us in the opera house they would start to ask questions. Nothing except for her and the fact that she was too close to that monster.
“I was invited,” he said lightly. Then he sniffed, and his eyes went dark. Too dark for a human. “Oh, my. This just got far more interesting.” Fuck. He could scent her on us. Scent us. And the way we were connected. “What are the chances that the three of you would find a mate? I guess I underestimated her at Club Spectre.”
“I didn’t want that to be the last thing I said to you.” Her face crumpled again, but she pulled it back. “I never told you that I love you. And I do.” Light exploded in my chest, hearing those words. I knew—of course we knew. We could feel it even when she’d sent us away. But hearing it was like having the aurora borealis poured directly into my soul. Glorious, awe-inspiring, and like nothing else in the whole fucking universe. I kissed the back of her hand because it was the closest skin that I could reach. Alex was on his feet and with us in a flash, leaning down to kiss her bare shoulder.
