I didn’t know it then—I couldn’t have—but in that moment, the rest of my life, or what was left of it, began.
She took me inside her, and as my body was wracked with pleasure, I felt the most bittersweet of emotions, soaring and plummeting at the same time: joy, that I had this woman in my life, and a profound ache that I had met her too late. I would love you forever, Kacey, if I only had the chance.
“Lovers don’t finally meet somewhere. They are in each other all along,”
We had to go full tilt, just like the card players did. I would hit instead of stay. Always.
“You make me feel so good, Jonah,” I whispered. “Better than good. Like I can start all over again.” “Kacey.” He held my face in his hands, his dark eyes intent on me. “You make me feel alive.”
“It’s the best thing you’ve ever made,” Tania murmured. “Because loving her is the best thing I’ve ever done.”
I kissed Jonah Fletcher with all of my heart, and with every piece of my soul that would love him forever.
“What is it?” “Promise me,” Jonah said. His voice was weak and soft, but a desperate intensity wreathed his gaze. “What, baby…?” “Love again.”
“No. You will. Love him. Love him with everything. Like you loved me. Love him more.” His eyes closed. “I’m so happy, Kace. Never like this in my life. It’s…a gift. You know?” I ran the backs of my fingers along his face. “I know.” His eyes opened slowly. “Make someone else…feel like I do right now. Okay? Promise.”
