She sticks her hands into the soil and helps my grandfather repot his orchids. “The leaves are too dark,” she says, a finger tracing the edge of the stem. “When they’re this dark, it means they aren’t getting enough sunlight. Orchids are a little moody,” she adds, laughing. My grandfather pauses and looks up at her in surprise.
