Our criteria were straightforward: the place could be no more than a fifteen-minute drive from the town centre and train station, it must have shops and a pub, it couldn’t be too overlooked and had to be surrounded by plenty of long countryside walks for when we get that dog we’re always promising ourselves. I can’t face interacting with any of them at the moment. I want everyone to forget about me.

My best mate, Ranjit, tells me I’m playing with fire in wanting the best of both worlds, marriage and freedom, and I guess he’s right. But I can’t see myself stopping unless I get burned.

It takes a lot of forward thinking to be me.
