The realization was a punch to the stomach. Instead of closing the distance between us, I reached down and grabbed the remote, blindly turning on the TV and staring at the screen. My heart raced in my chest, the truth hanging between us even as the moment was lost like a balloon floating away. I could see it. It was right there and forever out of reach.
