The church had given her many reasons to despise it, but it was still a powerful part of her, with her having been raised by devout Catholic parents in a devout Catholic town founded by their devout Catholic antecedents, who’d come there from Spain in the sixteenth century to show their devotion to their version of God by massacring countless Native Americans and taking away much of their land.
