Sarah expressed fear of Tyson when she was first introduced in the book, it was a feeling horribly akin to revulsion. This stuck with me, how long had she felt this way about Tyson, and chose to ignore that feeling? It is not a feeling that we have towards our significant other.

I personally believe Tyson literally feels this way with or without the desk. The desk just intensified how he felt, and he used it as a crutch an excuse the reasoning for his thoughts and actions.
