If I tried to defend them with the notion that many women who are assaulted may not tell the whole truth to cover up some embarrassment or, more likely, don’t remember some of what happened during or after the assaults, I was met with variations of the argument that “to lie is not a good starting point. We can’t just look at these cases with the starting premise of ‘People lie.’ It’s not a good premise.” But people do lie. All the time. About all sorts of things.
