“It’s a great neighborhood. Safe and quiet.” She tilted her head toward the men. “Minus a little Mayhem. Plus, the houses are great for a little family…” Unlike Ward, she didn’t come right out and ask where my man was, but I could tell she wanted to. I didn’t know if it was the friendly vibe, the impending food, or the virgin margarita that was in the works. Whatever the reason, I answered her unasked question in a roundabout way. My hand moved to my stomach. “It’s the perfect size for me and Squish.” Strangers’ reactions to my pregnancy could be split into two groups. The first group was far too nosy, offering unsolicited advice and insensitive warnings about the sleepless nights to come. As if the unknown wasn’t terrifying enough. The second group didn’t even acknowledge my pregnancy until I brought it up. My water could break in front of them, and they still wouldn’t make any comment unless I did. Ophelia seemed to fall into the second group. Because once I mentioned Squish, all bets were off. Her small smile grew as she openly looked at my stomach for the first time—no more furtive glances. “How far along are you?” “Twenty-three weeks.” “That’s so exciting.
