“Astrid, you’re allowed to be strange. You’re allowed to be a mess. You can be all these things that are part of you. It won’t stop me from loving everything about you.”
I open my mouth to reiterate that my father and I were never related by blood, but I realize that isn’t what she means. She doesn’t see his likeness in me, but the parts of him I’ll always carry. Qualities he infused in me through his kind nurturing.
“I accept you, humble farmer Torben Davenport,” I say, tone mocking, “but I have conditions. Well, one.” He pulls back enough to meet my eyes. “What’s that?” “How many kittens can I have?” His chest rumbles with laughter as he presses his lips to mine once more. “As many kittens as you want.”
