There was only the one. And that one is long gone.
Because this voice does not belong to Sam.
His feet looked like tripping hazards.
Sometimes I felt sure he was—like there was an invisible, unbreakable string that ran between us, stretching vast distances and keeping us joined.
or how it ended in a messy explosion that left no survivors.
But sometimes, when she’s really pissed, she calls me Samuel. She says it gives her more to work with.”
“I want it to be just like yours.”
“My dad’s dead, Percy,”
“I’ve never met anyone with such a big mouth before.”
I’ll take your questions over the pity any day.”
“I guess SPF 45 wasn’t strong enough.”
“I like them.”
“Could you get any further away from her, Samuel?” he chuckled.
“Could you get any more naked, Charles?”
“Want to trade up, Percy?”
“I don’t want you to go, either.”
he is as unmistakable as my own reflection.
I remember when he knelt over me in his bedroom, running those fingers along my body like he had discovered a new planet.
And the grief of that loss—of seeing Sam grow into a man—is a fist squeezing around my lungs.
We stand staring at each other silently, and then he takes three giant strides toward me and wraps his arms around me so tight it’s like his large body is a cocoon around mine.
“You came home.”
The lopsided grin that curves his mouth is a drug I’ve never kicked.
Sam is sexy.
He’s leaning against the counter, arms crossed, watching me.
“You were always a shit dishwasher,”
“I can’t believe you still eat cotton candy. How old are you?” he teases.
then leans over and runs his tongue flat over my scoop of ice cream, biting off a hunk from the top.
I’m not used to this Sam—one who seems fully aware of his effect on me.
can’t believe you got bangs again.”
“I didn’t realize you knew how to fully dress yourself,”
He grinned. “I pay attention to a lot of things about you, Percy Fraser.”
And Sam was cute.
“I dare you to kiss Percy.”
He bent down, took my face in his hands, and moved his mouth over mine before I had a chance to react.
“Do you have your period?”
“Do you have wet dreams?”
my eyes stuck to him like a tongue to a metal pole in winter.
“Now we can finally see why Sam never hangs out with us in the summer.”
because if they don’t like you, they’re clearly morons.”
“Sometimes I think no one gets me the way you do,”
“I don’t ever want to mess that up.”
it is a stupidly great butt.
“It’s a lot having you here. It kind of feels like I’ve been punched in the heart.”
all I can think is how much I want to suck on that crease.
“Calm down, Percy. You look like you’ve been busted watching porn.”
“Oh?” he asks, bumping my knee with his. “And how did I grow up?”
It felt wrong without you.”
“Girlfriend.”
