Rumination can be divided into two aspects, which Nolen-Hoeksema called reflection and brooding. An example of reflection is writing down what you are thinking, perhaps several days in a row, and analyzing your thoughts. Reflection is an intentional turning inward, engaging in problem solving in order to alleviate your feelings. On the other hand, brooding reflects a passive state. Brooding is finding yourself thinking about your mood even though you did not set out to think about it, and persisting in these thoughts even when you try to stop thinking about it.
