The dominant environmental concern with all things oil has been about carbon dioxide emissions, but technologies, like the internal combustion engine, that burn oil products to produce those emissions are hardly the only things that use oil. Oil is also the base material for the bulk of the world’s petrochemical needs. That sector is not a rounding error.
