Her, his mind whispered, unreeling the single syllable like the filament of a spider’s web.
But holding Mercy was the same thing as coming home, and he drew her in closer and tighter, feeling her warmth against him, breathing in the pine scent of her hair.
He kissed her and tried not to get snot or tears on her face. Then again, she was crying, too, and he didn’t think he’d mind her snot or tears in the slightest.
Toward the end, Hart relented and let his dog Trudie go over to the kid for a pet.
She loved it when Uncle Hart
She smiled at him, dimples and all. “Hello, Sweet-Hart.”
