At present, the Autistic people (or anyone who is neurodiverse) who have the greatest freedom to unmask are the ones who otherwise have the most powerful social position. I have a PhD and a cushy job as a professor; that means I get to set my own schedule many days, can dress in a comfortable, quirky way that doesn’t give me gender dysphoria or sensory overwhelm, and block out alone time on my calendar when I feel a meltdown coming on.
