And let me say that this wasn’t an accident. It means something; everything does. In fact, you should take Annie to dinner tonight!”
Life isn’t like the movies—full of meet-cutes and random romances and serendipity.
And I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy the way her huge hazel eyes widened even further when I went along with her “he’s my boyfriend” charade.
I need time to process things, mull them over before being able to communicate how I feel. Or maybe because, annoying as she seems, Annie looked petrified to see Slimy Guy.
I always chose—and still choose—the people I surround myself with carefully. Don’t let many get too close.
But actual money management? No way. My credit card statement is all the proof you could ever need to that effect. You’d think I was trying to seduce the UberEats guy with the amount I spend on pizza delivery.
But as a woman in the tech world, I’ve been subjected to countless interrupters, mansplainers, and people who are just downright dismissive.
I remind myself that, even if I did like him like that—which I don’t—it could never be reciprocated. I’m a totem pole of all that he despises: flightiness, lateness, spontaneity.
So what if the guy is an onion—made up of lots of delicate, translucent layers to peel back? You know what else onions do when you peel them?
Yeah, they make you cry.
