Talk to me about authenticity, about who has the right to play whatever kind of music no matter what they look like or where they come from—I say you’re authentic if you play with the kind of feeling that takes you out of yourself to the point you don’t even know you’re playing anymore. It’s a trance. It’s getting into a trance, which is what all good musicians do, and nobody has dibs on that. Culturally, I mean. Or racially. Does that make me a jerk? Or a racist? What sort of music should I be playing, “Nights in White Satin”?
