My fists clench in my pockets, but I force myself to watch. It feels like watching is punishment for my own sins.
“Did you know, there’s thirteen pairs of American Bald Eagles in that park? It’s more than just a few shitty trees and a swamp.” “What do you care?” His eyes thin. “You sound like that bitch Aurora.” Bitch. An unnecessary amount of fury threads through my veins. I wash it down with a gulp of whiskey. “I care about the environment.” Tor bites out a laugh. “Tell that to your private jet.”
I huff out a bitter laugh. “Yeah, that’ll go down well.” He cocks a brow, waiting for more. “How would you feel if you found your fiancee in a dark corner, sharing a cigarette with a handsome man?” He stares at me. At first blankly, then his eyes thin. “You think I’m handsome.”
Jump, she repeated. Because when you jump, you’ll find your wings as you fall. I glanced up at my father, who was hovering nervously on the bank, clutching a life buoy. I swallowed the fear rising up my throat, balled my fists, and I jumped. Not because I thought I’d miraculously be able to fly, but because I knew that if I fell and couldn’t get back up my parents would always be there to save me.
“Oops,” he drawls indifferently, without looking at me. “I think I just dropped my car keys.” His shoulder brushes against mine as he passes. I feel his hot breath in my ear. “Hopefully they aren’t found by a runaway bride.”
“I swear to God, Rory. You better know how to fly, because if you fall, I’m coming with you.”
