Freaking out about death every minute isn’t a good life, and yet, tons of people are freaking out about death every minute.
Dalma is gorgeous, an easy 10/10 with her brown eyes, silver mascara that matches her lipstick, glowing dark brown skin, and her black hair braided into a topknot.
it’s wild how being attracted to someone can feel so exciting and dangerous, like he can be everything good and bad for me. I can’t tell the color of his eyes, but man, I want to know.
Orion 11:59 p.m. I write short stories because I am one. I wish I was a novel.
I look up at Valentino, wondering what life could’ve offered if I had more pages in me.
“A ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for.”
He likes to think he’s giving people the opportunity for one last sail.
“If these lives are truly our only ones, we’re better off living them without the mystery of when it will all be over. You know what you can’t do once you’re pronounced dead? You can’t make sure your finances are in order for your family. You can’t finally do the thing you’ve been scared to do your entire life. You can’t tell someone you’re sorry. You can’t tell someone you love them.” Joaquin had uncrossed his legs and leaned forward, closer to the interviewer, like he was about to share the universe’s biggest secret. “Death-Cast won’t just tell people when they’ll die. We’ll make sure their

grab my phone even though I don’t want to answer my End Day call. But then I see the phone is dark, still, and silent. No DEATH-CAST caller ID, no vibration, no ringing. They’re not calling me. My heart doesn’t slow down, it’s still hammering as I look up and see Valentino holding his phone as it screams the warning of a lifetime.
Everyone is running for their lives, but not me. I no longer have one to run for.
I guess I do have a death wish: don’t die with any regrets.
“Val?” Scarlett is the only person in the universe who can use that nickname. Many others have tried, but it always feels wrong. It’s like someone is trying to show how close we are when they haven’t put the time in.
there are currently Deckers roaming the country, unaware that it’s their End Day.
His dreams of receiving an End Day call with Christi as an ancient couple surrounded by children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren were over. He had to settle for dying in her arms, her tears on his face as he choked on his blood.
It feels so culty to tell people they’re going to die all night and then try to brush it off with a little meditation and an art project like we’re in kindergarten.”
The last time I left this building, I thought everything was beginning. I had all the hope in the world and years of dreams I would be working to make come true. Now as I push the door open, I’m building steel nerves to get me through what I can only hope to be the best End Day a Decker can possibly have.
He can’t even imagine Rufus spending his End Day with a stranger. Férnan will make sure he never puts his son in that heartbreaking situation.
Clint looks up with tears in his eyes. “Rolando. Rolando! Have a seat, have a seat.”
“Have you told her this?” “It hasn’t felt like my place.” “When will you tell her? Her funeral?”
No child should grow up watching their parents fight. Well, is it even a fight if one parent doesn’t ever hit back?
Guilt when I laughed for the first time.
“Thank you for being the most thoughtful person ever.” Orion squeezes. “You kidding? You won that award when you offered me your heart.”
I get out and follow him up the stairs and outside the station with a new mission before I die. Make sure Orion knows he deserves the world.
The early days with Frankie were passionate, as if they were floating above everyone else in their orbit, to the point where whenever Gloria was brought back to earth, she missed that high. So much so that she ignored the red flags billowing in the winds.
She won’t be able to spend her life with Rolando, but they can have today.
I’m done playing this shit where we got to be nice to people who hate on us for how we love. They’re the reasons why we got it so hard, why we lock away our feelings even though it means we’ll die without knowing the happiness that comes to others so easily.
That means there’s still one Decker living their life, unaware it’s their End Day.
“It’s okay, Mateo,” the man says.
I’m going to call my parents and tell them it’s my End Day.
Will my parents still tell me I’m going to hell once they discover it’s my End Day?
“I hate you.” “No, you don’t.” “No, I don’t.”
People think Paz is a bad guy because he played one in that movie, but he’s a hero. He’s a hero who is going to save his mother’s life.
Frankie is about to land another punch on Gloria when fire strikes him out of nowhere. He falls on his side. Paz stands over him, holding a gun, and fires again. Not even Death-Cast could have prepared him to die that way.
Pazito will be scarred for the rest of his life, haunted by the ghost of the father he killed,
“Valentino is showing signs of brain death.”
“We’ll pray for his soul, and his family,” Dayana says. “Only the sister,” Dalma says. Valentino’s parents can pray for themselves.
When they’re done, Dalma finds Scarlett’s number in her phone, saved from last night when Valentino first called her. She can’t help but feel like a Death-Cast employee as she makes this call.
What went wrong for Scarlett’s brother went right for Dalma’s friend.
But she’ll never forget him. Scarlett doesn’t have to carry her brother’s heart for him to forever live in hers.
“Everyone would create a profile on the app so you can find your best match, but I don’t think it should be random selection. This is personal, and the Decker should choose who they invite into their life, especially with time so limited. I can even create the option for Deckers to pair up. Then whoever gets the honor of being chosen to keep the Decker company, they’ll help them however they can. It might just be basic companionship as they get their affairs in order. It could be hyping up the Decker to live a lifetime on their End Day.”
But not all scars are bad. I look down at the one across my chest. The scar that says I was more than Valentino’s Last Friend.
This will be the first of many times I honor Valentino.
