Freaking out about death every minute isn’t a good life, and yet, tons of people are freaking out about death every minute.
Freedom should be freeing, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be heartbreaking.
I’d rather be planets apart as long as she’s still breathing on the other side of the galaxy.
I don’t know if I can orbit around someone this beautiful and not just fall in love, stay in love, and die in love.
It’s not fair how someone can do everything right and still be hurt because someone else does one thing wrong.
“I understand that the person who gets the Death-Cast call isn’t the only one dying. If you really hold someone in your heart, you die too.”
“Here’s the truth no one ever wants to admit when death is on the horizon, or when you’re deep in that grief—as long as you keep existing, you’ll keep breathing, and if you’re breathing, one day you’ll start living again.”
“I want to make great memories. Something to look back on whenever existing seems hard.”
I write short stories because I am one. I wish I was a novel. Breaths away from midnight, I know my final chapter is close. I look up at Valentino, wondering what life could’ve offered if I had more pages in me.
They’re not calling me. My heart doesn’t slow down, it’s still hammering as I look up and see Valentino holding his phone as it screams the warning of a lifetime.
“Hi, Mr. Rosa. This is Valentino. Everything okay?” There’s a pause on his end. I almost check to see that he hasn’t hung up. “Unfortunately not, Valentino.”
The first. This is the first End Day call. The first time Death-Cast is calling someone to tell them they’re going to die. This is not how I want to go down in history.
This idea that if Orion had been called by Death-Cast they might not take care of him is horrifying.
If I’m brought to the hospital later, will the doctors bother trying to save my life? Or will they stand there and watch me die?
It’s heartbreaking how much it costs to be alive when you’re always dying.
Death-Cast isn’t calling Orion because he’s not going to die today, and I think I know why.
“You don’t need the waitlist anymore, Orion. I’ll give you my heart.”
Valentino should have many decades under his belt before finding peace with passing his heart like a baton to a young person in need. But unless there’s a miracle, our story won’t have a happily ever after. It’ll end in tragedy.
“If all goes well,” Dr. Emeterio says as she studies my X-ray. “Your contribution today may change the future of all heart transplants.” “I won’t even get to see it.”
In fact, I’m going to live. I’m going to live, live, live, live, live, live, live, live, live, live, live, live. But first, he has to die.
“I’m sure he’ll be open to your input. It’s your heart now.” “Nope, it’s still his heart.” “It won’t be anyone’s heart if he dies.” “Then it’s not meant to be.”
I can’t predict the future like Death-Cast, but I already know that my time with Valentino will end in heartbreak.
“Middle ground: Dead Enders.” “That’s too morbid.” Valentino stares dead ahead. “Dying is morbid, Orion.”
In a world that currently has no problem leaving people to sleep on the streets, I’m already nervous how Deckers are going to be treated as time goes on. It’s a good thing Valentino won’t have to suffer from that nonsense.
“Only good? You called me great before. How can I regain some points?” “Let me think,” he says. If Valentino asked for a kiss, he’d find my lips on his so fast.
Valentino’s heart-shaped lips shut me the fuck up.
“I’m going to take you on your first date, Valentino.”
“Take me home, Orion.”
He’s going to live.
“The board approved the surgery,” Valentino says.
Paz runs back into the living room, which doesn’t feel like a room for living after he points the gun at his father and pulls the trigger.
Paz stands over him, holding a gun, and fires again. Not even Death-Cast could have prepared him to die that way.
I just don’t understand something. If his heart is beating, why doesn’t it feel like he’s alive?
Gloria’s son has killed his father to protect her.
