“Want to know a secret, Sunshine?” His tongue darts out between his lips, and his gaze drops to my mouth, then flicks back to my eyes. “I would’ve noticed.” He walks away but pauses near the stairs. “And you’re right. You and I don’t know each other. But I’ll let you keep the shirt. It looks good on you.”
But when you’re the villain in your own story, it’s hard to stop yourself from fighting for the opposite in someone else’s. Even if it’s only for a minute.
I cage her in on both sides of her head, pressing my hands against the wall behind her and leaning close. Her air is my air. Her breath is my breath. And her scent? I want to rub it all over me. Commit it to memory. Mix it with mine until we’re one, and nothing can take her away from me.
I scoff and stand on my tiptoes, closing a bit more of our height difference, though it doesn’t make me feel any less small. “And what am I? Huh, Colt? Your plaything? Your tutor? What am I to you? I wanna know––” His mouth slams against mine, taking my breath with it as he slips his tongue between my lips and tangles his fingers in my damp hair.
“Simply trying to repay the favor. Tell me, Colt. How do you want me?” Fuuuuck.
I just fucked my best friend’s ex. Shit.
She’s right about pursuing anything other than a casual hookup turning our worlds upside down. What she doesn’t understand is…I’d be okay with it.
“I don’t mind complicated. Not if it’s for something I want.”
“I’m not trying to steal your friend away,” Colt argues. “At least not until after you guys convince me what’s so great about The Bachelor.” Mia exchanges another quick glance with Kate, smiles, and turns to me. “Oh, honey, your boy toy has so much to learn.” They head back to the couch and turn on the first episode.
It hits me then. We aren’t fighting because of hockey. We’re fighting because Logan’s an ass, and she’s learning how to trust again. But she’s talking to me about it. She’s trying to be open. To be honest.
“Guess I’m not parent material. I mean, if I can’t even make my own mom and dad like me…” “Hey,” he scolds. “Be nice to my Ash.” “Your Ash?”
“Say you’re mine,” I growl. “Colt––” “Fucking say it, Sunshine.”
“Say you’re mine, and I’ll fuck you, Sunshine.” My nostrils flare. “Say you’re mine, and I’ll give you whatever you want until you’re sick of me.” My chest heaves. “Say you’re mine, and I’ll treat you like a fucking queen.” My hands flex around her wrists. “But not until––” “I’m yours.”
This girl. This damn girl. She might be the death of me. But I wouldn’t care if she was. Because she’s mine now. And there isn’t a chance in hell I’m ever letting her go.
Because even though he was an ass and we had our own problems, I didn’t want to hurt him. I only wanted to move on. Who would’ve thought it would be with his girlfriend, though? Karma really is a bitch.
“Don’t. Don’t belittle your own feelings because you’re afraid it’ll inconvenience someone else.”
“I’m not going to lecture you anymore because we both know it isn’t my place,” I add, my tone softening. “But if you care about Ash––and I know you do––you need to start showing it. Not only when it’s convenient for you. Not just around the holidays and shit. But all the time. Because I can guarantee one day, I’m gonna propose to Ash. And I know she’s going to want you to walk her down the aisle. But only if you’ve earned the right. And lately? It hasn’t been the case.”
“I don’t give a shit about Brooke, all right? Didn’t even know what you did until you decided to throw it in Ash’s face. My problem is that you think you can make her question whether or not I love her––whether or not she’s my world––it’s bullshit!” “You crossed that line first––” “Bullshit!” I repeat, my upper lip curling as I tower over him. “You lost her because you refused to treat her the way she deserves. That’s on you. Not me. And now that she’s mine, there is nothing that will take her away from me. Nothing. Do you understand me? And if you don’t keep your bruised ego out of our
