“You’re a ray of sunshine, Ash. You’re the only thing I’ve been looking forward to since I moved back. Maybe even before then,” he admits, his eyes going hazy. “Since my dad died.”
I can’t care about his past the way I want to. Because he isn’t mine.
As I close the door quietly behind me, I can’t stop the smile from spreading across my face. Surprised but grateful for how we ended things. But I think it’s why I like him. Because he sees me. He knows how to talk to me. To handle me. Sometimes, I’m afraid he might even know me better than I know myself. And while it’s a little terrifying, there’s comfort too.
It’s exhausting trying to keep everyone happy. Trying to take care of everyone. Trying to help everyone.
